Pictograph Cave State Park Billings Montana

We stopped for diesel right outside Billings and there was a sign saying "Pictograph Cave State Park" 6 miles down the road. " Let's go...why not!!"  The pictographs weren't as good as the ones we saw in Utah.  Do you know the difference between a pictograph and petroglyph?

A pictograph is a painting on rocks.  These are thousands of years old.  The only ones remaining are those usually done in a cave, out of the weather.  About the only thing we could see is the later ones done in red, from iron oxide.  The picture does not do it justice.  They did have some newer ones done in the 1700's.  They drew pictures of guns in red.  you could see them quite well.  A petroglyph is a carving in the rocks usually sandstone.  They last a lot longer.

Needless to say, we stayed on the path!
