HILTON HEAD ISLAND * SOUTH CAROLINA

BACK TO SOUTH CAROLINA * WELL WORTH THE TRIP
It was late in the day before we were able to head about 50 miles North of our site to Hilton Head SC.
It was well worth the trip, but of course, I didn't drive.  We saw how the top 10% live!  Not sure what the temperature was today.  But it was very humid and quite warm for 5:30 in the evening. Happy Halloween!
                                                              Feet in the Atlantic!

Birds on a tower for the night.  From moving car!

The public beach was very nice with easy access.  There were a few people in the water.  It really wasn't that cold.  You actually couldn't see individual homes on the island, everything was set back from the roads lined with lots of trees.  A very high class place.

SAVANNAH GA ON MY MIND!

This is the RV Park
                       SAVANNAH GEORGIA

All the squares were lined with huge trees.
Where the Spanish Moss hangs from trees.  We were warned not to take any home with us, it is full of chiggers!!!  That reminds me of the sign in the State Park up in North Carolina.  "Don't feed the ticks".  We didn't!    Anyway back to Georgia.   Everybody that we have met on the road recommended Savannah as a must see.  We spent all  yesterday downtown riding around in a trolley and walking the streets.  It was a real step back in time.  Wonderful old mansions and buildings.  Lots of them from the mid 1700's.  After the Revolutionary War it became a great place to grow cotton and rice.  We have seen some cotton fields along the freeway, but haven't had a chance to take a picture yet.
Old home turned into museum
Lots of plant life on everybody's porch

Independent Presbyterian Church  1889-1890
This is the Davenport House Museum 1820
Notice the double entry steps.  Back in the day it was disrespectful for a man to look at a woman's legs or ankles as they were going up stairs.  So one side was for the men and the other side for the
ladies.  A far cry from today, right?
We ate lunch at Joe's Crab House over looking the Savannah River.  It is the fourth busiest port in the US.  Vern saw several dolphins bobbing in the river.  I missed seeing them.
                                         They had some river cruises

The Waving Girl Statue * 1972          The story goes, her first love went to sea, never to return.  For 43 years she met every ship that entered the port with a waving towel during the day and a lantern by night.

The Olympic flame burned here during the1996
Atlanta Summer Olympics for all the boating
competition.

NEXT STOP * SOUTH CAROLINA

                                           DIDN'T SEE ANY TAR HEELS

We spent four nights at Fort Jackson Recreation Area, Weston Lake.  It was really nice there.  But I didn't take any pictures of the lake, duh.  We were pretty busy, just doing general "catch up".  Laundry, vacuuming, washing vehicles, baking, going to the Temple and Church on Sunday.  No wi-fi so I spent two afternoons at the library on post, which was about 10 miles away, trying to catch up the blog.  Had to go onto the main base for laundry facilities also.
The base is huge, in fact it encompassed several huge lakes.  Come to find out, it is the Army's main boot camp for those to join from the East Coast area.  The Columbia South Carolina Temple was only about 5 miles from our camp site.  Church was about 10 miles away.  A really nice older building, with really  nice older people.  Not too many primary aged kids.
We did a Friday evening session
So of course, it was dark when we came out.

GEORGIA ON OUR MIND

About the only thing on our mind to see in the Atlanta Georgia area was the Temple.  Well, I guess we could have gone to the Coke Cola headquarters and viewed the vault containing the recipe for Coke.  That didn't excited us too much.  Sorry, Tracy we didn't see your Georgia Pacific headquarters building either.  (She works for them.)  Traffic was a real "bear".  But we did see a huge State Farm building as we were leaving town.  Rene is that their headquarters too?

We got there in time to do an evening session, which made for some of our best pictures of  Temples.
Of course it was dark when we came out.  The front reminded me of the Seattle Temple a lot.  But of course it had only one level.  It was a very big piece of property.  They had a Stake Center, a clothing store and at least five apartments for Temple workers to stay in.

GOOD BYE TENNESSEE

                                                  WE LOVED TENNESSEE

We  loved Tennessee.  The people are really nice here.  The rest stops are great!
We went to church in the Goodletteville Ward.  Not too far from the RV Park where we were staying.
They about talked our leg off. : )  Any way they were really friendly.  We just missed the Primary program.
It was going to be the following week.  Second time that happened.
Another rest stop in Tennessee

Same rest stop

Bench and fish made out of little tiny colored tiles.

THE GRAND OLE OPRY

THE OPRY GOES PINK THIS NIGHT

The program was made up of all women, and $5.00 from every ticket went toward the cure for cancer.
It was a sold out crowd. 4,400 people on a Tuesday  night even!  We bought our tickets on the previous Friday, but were in the nose bleed section!
The opry is primarily a radio show and is on three times a week.  Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.  I didn't know that!  Thought it was on Saturday night only.
Outside the Grand Ole Opry

The nose bleed section with telephoto.  Thank goodness they had 3 big screens!
Inside the Grand Ole Opry House
LeAnn Rimes
LeAnn Rimes opened the show with one song, then was the closing act.  The rest of the program featured Mandisa, didn't recognize the name at first, but she was on America's got Talent, I believe.  Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, Jeannie Seely,  Natalie Grant, and Amy Grant.
Welcome to the Grand Ole Opry's fairly  new home.  They out grew the Ryman Auditorium downtown Nashville a few years ago, but had cut a circle of floor out of the original stage where many famous people had stood.  Most all the performers mentioned that night what a privilege it was to stand on that spot.  Especially the new up and coming artists.

Waiting for the show to start.

   Lorrie Morgan
Pam Tillis
Jeannie Seely
Rising star Natalie Grant sang a beautiful  religious song about our side winning in the end.

Amy Grant
All the women sang very uplifting encouraging songs about being survivors.  It was a very enjoyable evening.
And of course the show opener:  A Minnie Pearl look alike!

COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME MUSEUM

                                                   ELVIS IS ALIVE AND WELL!
We ventured downtown Nashville to go see the Country Music Hall of Fame

The big red ones are platinum.  This is one by   Johnny Cash.

This is just a small part of the gold records earned   by different country artists.

Elvis's gold piano
They had a special exhibit honoring Reba.A very special lady.

Some really wild costumes!
Smokey and the Bandit's car.

Of course Vern enjoyed all the cars and guns and "stuff".  I enjoyed looking at all the pretty dresses and wild costumes. It was a very beautiful building with three floors of country memorabilia with different interactive displays.  I could have spent all day there, but our $8.00 parking space was running out.
Kelly Pickler's "Dancing with the Stars" outfit

I don't really care for the Dixie Chicks, but I thought this display was interesting.  All the silver on these costumes are safety pins!!
