KITTY HAWK

MONUMENT TO A CENTURY OF FLIGHT

We purposely went out of our way to go to Kitty Hawk, hoping we could see the museum and monument commemorating the Wright Brothers first flight.  But it is a national monument and was closed with the government shut down.  Thank goodness we stopped at the tourist information center and found that in 2003 a monument to a century of flight was dedicated.  Since we were unable to see the Wright monument and museum all was not lost.
It was made up of 14 pylons arranged in a partial circle measuring 120 feet.  I didn't know it, but that was the distance traveled on the first Wright Brothers flight in 1903!
Each pylon listed some of the milestones in flight.
In the center was a bronze dome depicting the continents of the earth.
All the bricks were engraved with messages and names of sponsors from around the world.
I sure wouldn't want to live out on the Outer Banks, especially in  a storm.  It's just a big sand dune.
