MORE OF ST. AUGUSTINE FLORIDA
| Who remembers the Huguenots? |
| Lots of them lost their life to yellow fever. |
St. Augustine was controlled by various countries and people over the years. The wooden fort was burned down numerous times. Finally Queen of Spain sent money for the Spaniards to build a masonry fort. Because of lack of rock in the area, they discovered coquina, meaning little shells in Spanish, off the shore of Anastasia Island. One of only several places found in the world. It is very porous and can be cut with a shovel or axe when wet. It takes several years to completely dry. When hit by a cannon ball it will either bounce off or get stuck in the wall, rather than crumble. The fort was under siege but never taken.
